Neighbourhood Conversations- Westside Community Food Markets

Once a week this summer, a stretch of sidewalk in Kitsilano will be transformed into a community food market. Kitsilano Neighbourhood House (KNH) and the Society Promoting Environmental Conservation (SPEC) are once again collaborating on the project.

The markets are anticipated to start at the end of June/early July in the Vine and Broadway area (exact location TBA). We are buzzing away like worker bees planning to bring the markets to life and want to know:

What do you want to see for the markets?
How can you imagine yourself and your communities being involved?

We are hosting consultation opportunities for vendors, customers, community members, other organizations, networks & groups over the month of May to help shape the season. Your opportunities to engage include
1) A phone conversation with project coordinators.
2) Attending a facilitated community conversation the evenings of either May 22 or 23 from 5:30 PM to 6:30 PM at Kits Neighbourhood House, 3683 West 4h Ave. Note that this location is not accessible, please let us know if you have mobility concerns.

Who is off 4th?

The Owl’s Nest – a community preschool is off 4th. We are located on the beautiful Jericho Military Site and still part of the Kitsilano Neighbourhood House family.

On Wednesday May 9th, the children played host to their mum’s for Mother’s Day. The children began the day by wrapping their “pins” they had made. Next, tissue flowers were made for the table decorations. We did a rehearsal of the Mother’s Day song. Before long, it was a full house! The mum’s were invited to sit down, and the children served them a refreshment, strawberries and cream, and “homemade” chocolate chip cookies the children made at Preschool. Everyone had a wonderful time.

A beautiful moment occurred. One of the children had hurt themselves. He wanted to sit for a few moments before returning to play. Another friend quickly chose a book so she could read to him, to help ease his discomfort. What a great lesson in Empathy!

Now we will continue with the life cycle of the frog. The tadpoles are doing well, and they seem to like the lettuce to munch on. No limbs have presented themselves yet.

Participants are being recruited for a study: Learning Forgotten Histories of the Westside

If you’re a Kits House member who knows local history and who is interested in learning more about our often ignored, forgotten and erased histories, you may be able to participate in a new study at Kits House. This study will include participation in three historical dialogues and one interview with a researcher from UBC, Elizabeth Henry, graduate student in Education.

It’s Back- Kitsilano’s Biggest Garage Sale on Saturday July 21st

We are excited to be hosting the 2nd annual Kitsilano’s Biggest Garage Sale on Saturday July 21st, 2012. 11am-4pm. The Garage Sale is part of the Khatsalano! Music+Art Street Festival along West 4th Ave. We will be taking over West 4th between Balsam & Trafalgar.
