Seniors and Elders Guide to the Westside
In autumn 2008, over 100 Westside seniors and elders participated in workshops to identify community strengths, assets, and resources using the ‘Finding Home’ model, developed by Jessie Sutherland from the Finding Home Initiative.
The ‘Seniors and Elders Guide to the Westside’ Launch on Tuesday April 28th was a huge success! Over 70 people were in attendance to receive their copy of the guide and a ‘How to Create a Seniors and Elders Friendly Community’ reusable shopping bag.
Event highlights included: Speakers Colin Hansen, Heather Deal, and Mel Lehan; Yummy soup made by the Kits House Seniors Drop-In Program; Live cello performance by Jane Phillips; Cupcakes, prizes and salsa dancing.
Thank you to all the volunteers, participants, community members, and staff for your contribution, support, and creativity. You made the ‘Seniors and Elders Mapping Project’ and Guide Launch a great achievement!

“I was one of the many seniors who attended the ‘Seniors and Elders Guide to the Westside’ event on April 28th … Kitsilano is such a great neighbourhood and it is reassuring to know that so many community leaders are working hard to keep it that way. I also appreciated the informative books and reusable shopping bag which were distributed to everyone after the event… appreciation and deep thanks to all who made this event possible.” – Evelyn McElwain
