HELP PREVENT SENIOR ABUSE
VOLUNTEER FOR
A FREE THEATRE WORKSHOP
August 25-30,
2008
Do you know that one in five seniors suffer from some form of abuse?
Would you like to help vulnerable seniors? Kitsilano Neighbourhood
House is recruiting seniors to participate in this FREE six-day theatre
workshop on senior abuse. The workshop will inform and inspire
participants as they learn more about the issues.

Avenue & West Boulevard
Participants should have experienced or observed emotional, financial
or physical abuse, neglect or violation of seniors’ rights. No acting
experience needed. Volunteers should be 55 or older, be Vancouver
residents, and be able to participate in the workshop from 9 – 4 pm
Monday, August 25 through Friday, August 29 and on Saturday, August 30
from 12 noon to 9:00 pm. Lunch and refreshments provided. A diversity
of perspectives from within the community is welcomed. David
Diamond is Artistic Director of Headlines Theatre whose “theatre for
living” has evolved from the work of Paul Freire and Augusto Boal which
is known as “theatre of the oppressed”.
This project is funded by the Government of Canada’s New Horizons for
Seniors Program.

Seniors Links Program
This
program brings together seniors in the community who need a hand around
the house with students able to help. Cost: Service through Kits House
is free, but seniors must pay the student a minimum of $10/hour for a
minimum of 2 hours.

- Pet Care
- Computer Help
- Reading Aloud

Westside Seniors Peer Support Program
offers
confidential
no-cost peer counseling and support services to older adults.
Peer support volunteers offers listening support to seniors who are
feeling lost, depressed, or lonely due to: relocation or a new living
situation; Separation from family members; Bereavement; Health and
aging concerns; Anxiety.

are a senior who is interested in helping others and would like to
become a peer support volunteer, please contact Claudine for more
information about our free training course.
Spring Session: Osteofit Level 1 & 2
Osteofit is an exercise program designed for people with osteoporosis
who are
at an increased risk for fracture or who already have had one or more
fractures. This program gives people with osteoporosis the chance to
join in an exercise class that will meet their fitness needs. It
provides a place to meet and socialize with other people with
osteoporosis.

Knitting Group

The knitting circle is currently knitting teddy bears to be shipped by
the Rotary Club to children in under-developed countries. The group
also knits sweaters, socks, scarves, etc. that are donated to local
shelters.

Empowerment Coalition
is looking for senior
community members who are interested in being part of a coalition whose
mandate is to work with seniors to promote healthy aging through
physical, emotional, and spiritual well-being, as well as working
together to raise awareness & develop programs and supports to
seniors living on Vancouver's Westside.
Meetings are held the third
Wednesday of every month at Kits House from 9:30 – 11 am.
