Like a big, fluffy rug, the entrance area of a building should welcome you like a warm hug. As you take your first step into the space, the colorful sights and warm lights should draw you in with all their might.
As a community hub, Kits House is committed to making everyone feel welcome and included. Communal spaces need to be accessible, not secluded.
From this sentiment, a special project to brighten up the Kits House welcome area was born. Once the idea took shape, we let our creativity run free.
The location was quickly identified: the space under the main stairs.

The large metal cabinet was relocated, the wall repainted to look fresh and bright, safety foam taped to sharp edges, string lights hung along the ledge, colorful foam mats assembled, and new chairs placed beneath the wonderful Kits House 50th Anniversary community-made painting mounted under the stairs.
A group of hardworking UBC Engineering students volunteered for the day, making the space feel less grey!
A big task with a big impact—many hands make light work, and that’s a fact!
