The Multicultural Women’s Support Group returns to Kitsilano Neighbourhood House on September 16 for a new 10-week session.
The group offers immigrant women a welcoming place to connect, share experiences and build community. Participants do not need to be recent newcomers — all immigrant women are welcome, whether they are new to Canada or have lived in Vancouver for many years.
For volunteer host Diana, the group holds personal significance. She first participated as a newcomer in 2013.
“One of the best experiences I had as a newcomer, back in 2013, was participating in the Multicultural Women’s Support Group at Kits House. There I found friends, resources, and support.”
When Diana returned to Kits House, she and fellow volunteer Erika spoke with program coordinator Gemma about bringing the group back.
“That is why this became our goal: to reopen this program so immigrant women on the West Side can have a safe space close to home, where we can support each other, find resources, and overcome our fears.”
What happens in the group depends on the women who take part. Past conversations have explored practical topics such as healthcare, jobs, navigating Vancouver and using the library, as well as mental health, Indigenous history, celebrations and friendship.
As participants continued returning, Diana began inviting them to share their own knowledge and interests. In one session, a participant led the group in dancing. This fall, activities might include art, storytelling, reflective writing, group discussions, a picnic or something participants bring forward themselves.
Reflecting on the previous session, participant Jess described how Diana, Erika and Paula created “an atmosphere that was warm, welcoming, and truly supportive.” Together, she said, they created “a space that felt safe, uplifting, and empowering.”
“I not only learned so much, but I also felt a sense of community that I’ve been missing. The experience has stayed with me in such a positive way, and I’m truly grateful for all the effort, planning, and heart they each put into every session.”
For Diana, the hope is that the group will continue to grow through the experiences and contributions of the women who join it.
“We are just getting started, and part of my dream is that this group keeps growing, that we build community together, because the strongest bridges are built by many hands and many experiences.”
