The Community Fridge at Kits House is part of a larger network of fridges across Vancouver, managed by the Vancouver Community Fridge Project, an all-volunteer mutual aid group dedicated to addressing food insecurity and fostering community connection.
A Low-Barrier Way to Give and Receive
Community fridges are an important part of Vancouver’s network of supports to combat food insecurity. They provide a simple, accessible way for people to donate their excess food — and for others to take what they need, when they need it.
Anyone can access food from the fridge at any time of day, regardless of their circumstances. And anyone can contribute food, knowing it will go directly to neighbours who need it.
Rescuing Food, Reducing Waste
Much of the food in our community fridge comes through a food rescue program, which “rescues” food from grocery stores that would otherwise be thrown away. On the same day those items are taken off shelves, volunteers pick them up and restock the fridges across the city.
In 2024 alone, this effort rescued 143,322 pounds of fresh, nutritious food — keeping it out of landfills and putting it directly into people’s hands for free.
Powered by Volunteers and Community Spirit
The fridge is sustained by a small but mighty group of volunteers — about 55 volunteer delivery drivers and 45 maintenance volunteers — who package, deliver, clean, and organize food every week.
What makes this project especially powerful is that many volunteers are also fridge users. It’s a true example of neighbours helping neighbours — where everyone gives what they can and takes what they need.
We’re deeply grateful for these volunteers and invite anyone who feels inspired to get involved. Every act of support, whether it’s a donation, a delivery, or a kind word, helps keep the fridge going strong.
